Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria (December 1, 1949 – December 2, 1993) was a Colombian drug lord who reigned during the seventies and eighties and made headlines due to his immense wealth and revolutionary drug distribution network. He was an elusive cocaine trafficker and rich and successful criminal. He owned numerous luxury residences, automobiles, and even aeroplanes. In 1986, he had a short-lived career in Colombian politics.
Pablo Emilio Escobar Gaviria was born on December 1, 1949, in the Colombian city of Rionegro, Antioquia, with his family later moving to the residential area of Envigado. He was third to the seven children to a farmer and a schoolteacher. From an early age, Escobar had a unique drive and ambition to raise himself up from his humble beginnings.
As a young man, he told his friends and family that he wanted to become the president of Columbia. He got his start as a petty little thief who sold fake lottery tickets and scammed people on the street and this escalated to more serious crimes in his late teens as trafficking marijuana and stealing cars which made him a millionaire at 22.
RISE TO POWER
Escobar came to fame during the “Marlboro Wars” in which he played a high-profile role in the Columbian smuggled cigarette market. It proved to be a training ground for the future narcotics kingpin.Escobar killed his way to the top as you can imagine a gang or crime family is full of violence and betrayal,so Pablo took his chance. In 1975, Escobar started developing his cocaine operation. He even flew a plane himself several times, mainly between Colombia and Panama, to smuggle a load into the United States.
At the age of 26 in 1975, he made a deal with the Medellin syndicate head Fabio Restrepo which involved in 14 kilos of cocaine and killed him later informing the press and Restrepo’s employees that they now work for him effectively taking charge and beginning his rise to drug baron and expanded Restrepo’s operation into something the world had never seen.
Pablo made many friends in law enforcement throughout his tenure as drug baron so that they turned a blind eye to his illegal actions.Escobar worked with a small group to form the infamous Medellin Cartel. By the mid-1980s, Escobar controlled more than 80 percent of the cocaine smuggled into the United States. More than 15 tonnes of cocaine were reportedly smuggled each day, netting the Cartel as much as $420 million a week.
Pablo became involved in politics to fight extradition. In 1982 Pablo was elected as an alternate member of the chamber of representatives of Columbia’s congress as he knew he can never bribe his way around the law in the United States. Pablo loved poor and poor loved him and called him as “Paisa Robinhood”.Pablo gave half of his riches to poor that gained him praise and devotion.Theirs’s a neighbourhood in Medellin that still praises his name.
Pablo also sponsored local children football team and build sports complexes , schools, and churches. The poor were so devoted to him by his actions towards them that they defended him and that Pablo used as a political advantage. The people were so devoted to him that when he died in 1993, 25000 people showed up for his funeral.
Pablo had so much cash that he purchased a Learjet for the sole purpose of flying his money. His pilots earned around $500,000 per flight for trafficking of 11 tonnes of cocaine per flight.Pablo was insanely rich,he was named as the 7th richest man by Forbes list.He builds a grandiose mansion on an island paradise.
Pablo had so much money that in order to hide it from the government he had to dig that into the Colombian soils.
As per the reports from Pablo,s brother Gustavo Gaviria,Pablo spent 1000$ per week on rubber bands to tie his cash together.Supplying 80% of US cocaines ,by the 90,s Pablo was officially worth 30 billion dollars.
Pablo Escobar said that the essence of the cocaine business was “simple – you bribe someone here, you bribe someone there, and you pay a friendly banker to help you bring the money back.” In 1982 Escobar was elected as an alternate member of Colombia’s Congress. But the reasons for his wealth could not stay hidden and two years after his election, he was forced to resign, with the justice minister who had revealed Escobar’s notorious background later slain.
Pablo policy against the war of government was Pl0m0 O Plata which means Silver or Lead which according to his theory was either you can accept problems bribe or you can accept his bullets.
Pablo caused Columbia to become murder capital in the world in early 90,s.The country suffered over 27000 violent death is 1992 alone because of war raged between cartels and Columbian authorities equalling 74 murders a day.Pablo was behind 4000 to 5000 deaths in total.
Pablo also murdered Louis Carlos Galan , a candidate for the presidency of columbo in 1989.
Pablo made the bombings of Avianca Flight 203 killing 107 innocent people and DAS building bombing that killed 52.
And this was the result later:
And here’s what happened to the DAS building:
SURRENDER AND ESCAPE
In June 1991, Escobar surrendered to the Colombian government of President Cesar Gaviria. In return, the threat of extradition was lifted and Escobar was allowed to build his own luxury prison called “La Catedral,” which was guarded by men he handpicked from among his employees. The prison lived up to its name and came complete with a casino, spa and nightclub.
In June 1992, however, Escobar escaped when authorities attempted to move him to a more standard holding facility. A manhunt for the drug lord was launched that would last 16 months.During the time of Pablo Escobar’s imprisonment, the business of Medellin cartel began to crumble as the police officers raided offices and killed their leaders.
In 1992 , a vigilante group calling them Los Pepes burned Pablo Escobar’s compound and killing family members. They killed Escobar’s co-conspirators every day and hung signs from their necks that read: “For working for the drug terrorist (“narcoterrorists”) and the baby-killer, Pablo Escobar.”
LosPepes burned a government warehouse which stored Escobar’s 17 luxury old cars. They murdered or threatened anyone who helped “The Boss,” or Pablo Escobar, whether they were lawyers, family, workers, anything. Those who were not killed by Los Pepes surrendered to the government.
Los Pepes are rumoured to have helped the U.S. and Colombian governments in locating and killing Escobar in December 1993.US agencies worked with Columbian forces and through radio triangulation technology they located Pablo Escobar in Medellin which resulted in a shootout at the rooftops in 1993
Pablo and his bodyguard were shot and killed while they were trying to escape through the rooftops on December 2, 1993.Assisting in the manhunt were two American Drug Enforcement Agents,Steve Murphy, and Javier Peña, both of whom had been working the Escobar case for years.
Escobar married Maria Victoria Henao, a 15-year-old bride, in 1976. The couple had two children together: a son, Juan Pablo, and a daughter, Manuela.
Shortly before his death, Escobar’s family unsuccessfully sought asylum in Germany and eventually found refuge in a Bogota hotel. After Escobar’s death, the family was placed under police protection.
Pablo’s son changed his name to Sebastian Marroquin who wrote a book “Pablo Escobar: My Father” which tells the story of growing up with the world’s most notorious drug lord.
He also states that his father Pablo committed suicide rather than getting shot down by the police. It’s still unclear whether he pulled the trigger himself or it came from the authorities.
Pablo Escobar remained in the hearts of the poor although when he was killed 25000 people came to mourn his death.
Pablo Escobar’s old estate is now a Jurassic park themed zoo named Hacienda Nápoles
