Among numerous project led by Google,One of the most promising project is Project Tango.Project Tango is a Google Project to give Mobile phones a sense of space.
Project Tango is a Google technology platform that uses computer vision to enable mobile devices, to detect their position relative to the world around them without using GPS or other external signals .
Just imagine a world where your phone can detect its location without using GPS or any other location based services. Isn’t it sounds interesting.
According to official definition:
Project Tango technology gives a mobile device the ability to navigate the physical world similar to how we do as humans. Project Tango brings a new kind of spatial perception to the Android device platform by adding advanced computer vision, image processing, and special vision sensors.
This year at Google I/O 2016,virtual reality being one of the main area of interest,Project Tango’s session started off with explaining the path that Project Tango had started down, over three years ago, in 2012, when there was nothing more than a concept drawing. Then it started with various steps of achievements that Tango have reached to convert it into reality.
The release of Android N which include APIs for virtual reality,Project tango will have much more capabilities with these devices.
On google I/O various demos were shown which made the system more promising and relatively easy to understand, some of these were:
-App that let you put a dinosaur in the middle of the room and then tap the plus button a few times to make it look huge in the middle of the real-life environment in the background.
-App that made little flowers sprout in the middle of the floor.
-App in which you could select furniture and have a model of it unboxed and placed right next to you, so you could see if it would be a good fit.
Though getting argumented reality(AR) with other systems is possible, but bringing it to mobile phone will make it more accessible for larger amount of people.
In January 2016, Google announced a partnership with Lenovo to release a consumer smartphone during the summer of 2016 to feature Project Tango technology. At LenovoTechworld 2016, Lenovo launched world’s first consumer phone based on Google’s Tango Project.
